When I Think of Research

My simulation is very important to the early childhood field because it helps children from long term suffering from the affects of child neglect. Bringing awareness to the ways we can decrease child neglect helps not only children but families, caregivers, and mandated reporters. Children would benefit by not having to go through adulthood with the past of abuse hovering over them. People will know the signs of when something is going wrong in a child's life and be able to help sooner rather than later when too much damage has been done. With caregivers this simulation will give them the tools needed to notice and report child neglect when seen, and families the resources to help their child and themselves. The only way that comes to mind about my view of early childhood professions is that we need to be more knowledgeable about what goes on in a child's life and the signs when shown of abuse or neglect. I thank everyone for all the thoughtful comments this course, we made i...

Early Childhood Australia

Being honest one of the reasons I chose this site was because I want to travel someday to Australia, and I thought to myself well this research might be interesting to know about. This website actually focuses on many different topics such as: " Child and family centres, programs and support services Inclusion support Social and emotional wellbeing Maternal & child health services Parent education (birth to eight)" (Connor, n.d.). I learned they are actually trying to get a Child Care Package law passed that will help families tremendously with financials for child care. Most families have already reached their cap limits and childcare isn't getting any cheaper. Many children miss out on getting the education they deserve because the costs are so high or not reasonable or they don't receive enough caps to cover the cost. They Also have resources available to caregivers about professional development, and parents concerning their child's first...

Child Abuse

The topic I would choose is child abuse, "e very year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States" (O'Meara, Fedderson, 1959). I would want to make a machine that was able to detect every type of abuse a child can endure. It would be set up right when they walk into their classroom they would have to get passed this detection in order to enter the classroom. With this machine you can either set the child inside a basket and go through or if they are  able to walk they can just walk through. There would be a meter at the top allowing the caregiver to see all the levels of abuse a child might have been affected by.  I believe this machine will defiantly have a positive impact or contribution toward children/caregivers. and families. It will allow us not to miss any type of abuse that might be going on and save lives in the process. Child abuse is going unnoticed and unreported because we aren't educated,"t here are many forms of child ...

Personal Research

My chosen topic for the simulation is child abuse. The reasoning behind me choosing this topic comes from my yearning to learn more about the history behind it, and why the ratios are so high. Child abuse is not a light subject, nor should it be put on the back burner. Its more than physical abuse its mental, emotional, and verbal abuse as well. There is also neglect and both abuse and neglect can have long-term affects on a child especially if not caught early on. “ Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves -- they also impact their families, future relationships, and society” (Feit, Joseph, Petersen, & Insitutue of Medcine and National Research, 2014) .  I want to know if anyone has any advice or insight that might help me process throughout this cou...

Final Blog Assignment

From all the research this class has brought me I have learned many things that helped my professional and personal development in the early childhood education field. For one I learned that poverty is much more than what we see on the streets, and it affects children deeper than i ever thought. However, I also learned that there are many resources available to people that can help children and families in need. I have gained knowledge from my website ZerotoThree from all the newsletters they send about children and the importance of the early years of life. This website has really given me a source base for understanding children and why they act and react the way they do. This website also gives me a outlet to give to parent if they needed any resources or questions answered about their children. Even though I wasn't able to talk with my professional because the podcast had ended listening to all the old ones really gave me a great understanding of teachers around the world. One...

UNESCO

Since I still haven’t heard from a professional, I chose to research the website provided this week. I have learned three different things from this website pertaining to early childhood education and my field. “ Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is more than preparation for primary school. It aims at the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing”(UNESCO, n.d.). There are many different websites that promote and help early childhood educators provide quality education to these children. They also have resources available to children who might not have access to high quality care. Another fact I learned is, “  For disadvantaged children, ECCE plays an important role in compensating for the disadvantages in the family  and combating educational inequalities”(UNESCO, n.d.). A lot of countries around the world don’t have the advantages we do when it c...

Five Questions

I followed a link connecting to a link under policy and advocacy, talking about poverty declining but how its still affect early brain connections. I found this link interesting because this is the first time in years that the poverty rate for children has dropped below 20 percent. "t hat means 168,000 fewer infants and toddlers lived in poverty last year than in 2015" (Cole, 2017). Under this article were many other relating articles about putting babies and there needs into the policy picture. Although my recent newsletter was not about the poverty of children, it was more so focused on children and how exploring their bodies is normal. Questions like, "what do you tell your child their private parts are came up" and answers were telling them the correct name which is true because God forbid anything happen to a child and they don't know the proper name to their private area it wont hold up in a court of law. My website did have information about school readi...

Global Children's Initiative

"Recent reports estimate that 200 million children fail to reach their full developmental potential by age 5. Drawing on our experience in North America, the Center on the Developing Child works globally to build a broader movement to achieve breakthrough outcomes for children around the world" (Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, 2010). The Center on the Developing Child is helping not only in the U.S. but in Brazil, Canada, and Mexico saving brains of children. In Brazil they are coming up with new ways and angles on addressing childhood issues and putting them to a test. I learned that Canada Is working on ways to close the gap between what we know and what we do. "Inequity pervades early childhood education, seriously restricting who has access to services, the quality of the services themselves, the quality and competency of those who teach young children, the nature and application of regulations, the quality and thoroughness of the expectations ...

Sharing Web Resources

The website I chose a couple weeks ago Zero to Three has so many sections that helps me in my line of work. The website in general is a dictionary to working with the age group of infants. It helps me understand why they are the way they are, and many activities and different things I can do to help their development. The section 'explore our topics' helps me because they have subsections underneath dedicated to certain areas that helps parents and caregivers understand children a little better. One sub section that helped me recently is the "challenging behaviors" telling me why children have tantrums, helping them channel their aggression, how to help them cope as well. "As young children are just beginning to develop self-control, challenging behavior is common and expected in the years form birth to three" (Zero to Three, n.d.). The Idea of screening newborns I had never heard of before until I got a newsletter from this website telling me the importanc...

Child Poverty

Child poverty is not a subject that should be taken lightly! Since I didn't hear back from my professionals I choose to look at the website that was given to us for this assignment. One thing I learned is that, "w hile an adult may fall into poverty temporarily, falling into poverty in childhood can last a lifetime – rarely does a child get a second chance at an education or a healthy start in life" (). Anything can effect us during childhood and mold us into the adults we are today. Which is why its so important children grow up in a loving, safe, and caring environment.  I learned how important a child's upbringing  can be and what affects not only them but future generations to come if they don't change the road they are traveling. We cant ignore the fact most of the children that are always in trouble grew up in a dysfunctional environment. Or something tragic happened in their childhood that changed them either way we have to take into consideration the imp...

Sharing Web Resources

The Organization I choose was Zero to Three and I've subscribed to the newsletters of, "Baby Steps Newsletter for Parents and Caregivers". The purpose of this organization is to make sure all babies and toddlers have a great strong start in life. " During the first three years of life  emotionally nourishing relationships lay the foundation for lifelong health and well-being" (Zero to Three, 2017).  One current trend is the benefits of newborn health screening which allows many babies around the world the chance to grow up and live a healthy life. September happens to be newborn screening awareness month. I wasn't aware how much of an impact a screening can have on a child, or lack thereof.  Screenings do catch things before they turn into something bigger and untreatable, ultimately saving a child's life.  I've learned so much from subscribing to this newsletter such as, grandparents and their impact on their grandchildren. "Grandparents are a...

Expanding Horizons and Expanding Resources

The podcast I chose to follow is called, "Angela Watson's Truth for Teachers". From this episode I learned some very good tips and practices I can put into effect in order to make sure I'm getting the proper rest and self-care I need. Teachers are no help to a student if they aren't in the right state of mind to teach, and that can be for many reasons such as lack of sleep, lack of eating, lack of exercise, lack of training, and many more reasons. Sometimes I get stressed out in class because I don't have all the materials needed to properly teach my students, yes they come first but if I'm not being supplied with the materials to teach them with then my state of mind is being jeopardized. Self-care goes a long way instead of just sitting around at home watching t.v. like I do I could watch an educational documentary and improve my skills as a teacher. This podcast is meant to, "speak life, encouragement, and truth into the minds and hearts of educato...

My Supports

Within my daily environment I have a lot of people and things that support and aid me in getting my job done correctly. Some things I rely on and would have a hard time functioning without in my classroom is the app called precious status which is the form of communication between the school and the parents about their child. I never knew how much gloves came in handy either until we ran out one day and it was very hard trying to change children with the improper gloves or clean up for that matter. My director and assistant are also supportive people who help me throughout the day to make the day go smoother within the classroom and outside. My director makes sure I'm up to date with all my required trainings that way I can be the most effective teacher for my students. My assistant makes sure I'm not overwhelmed within the classroom and helps me with lesson plans, activities, and many other aspects of the classroom. I would be able to function without my assistant but it would...

My Connections to Play

1."We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” -George Bernard Shaw 2.“Play is the beginning of knowledge.” -George Dorsey When I was younger play was a major part of my daily routine. I was barely in the house growing up, if anything I never wanted to back inside when the street lights came on. I learned so many rights and wrongs from climbing trees, riding my bike in the street, missing curfews, having play dates also taught me social skills as well. Parents always wanted the kids out the house, because sitting in front of a screen wasn't teaching them what they can learn from experience. Now a days it's a rare chance you see children who actually want to go outside and play, and that's all because of the time of techonokogy. Parents need to watch how much time they are letting their kids be on these tablets, cell phones, and computers.

Relationship Reflection

Over the years I have formed many relationships in my life and I strongly believe they have made me into the woman I am today. Different relationships teach you different things, some even change us for the better or for the worse. I will talk about three relationships I have in my life right now that I believe have changed me for the best. Me and my mom have a amazing bond from when I was little I was able to tell her anything and she has always been there for me supporting me along the way. I would say she is my best friend too, most people don't have that type of connection with their parents but I'm glad I do because when I was going through hard times and didn't feel I had anyone to turn to she was always there. My mom has inspired me to be the best I can and that I can do anything I put my mind too. Growing up seeing her struggle to pay my tuition but still being able to in the end gave me all the motivation I needed. The second person I will talk about is my best f...

When I think of Child Development

"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults."- F. Douglas  This quote is so valid on so many different levels, being able to teach children at a young age and instill in them right from wrong helps them to become better adults in the future. Once an adult is stuck in their ways its hard to teach a dog new tricks as they would put it.

Testing for Intelligence

Back in the day intelligence wasn't measured by who can think the fastest or who was smarter than another, life was just so much easier back then. "Over the centuries, though, we humans have placed higher and higher values on intelligence, and have developed ways to measure it" (Berger, 2016). I don't believe a test should the decison maker on if a child is able to go to a certain school or next grade. A test cant measure someones abilities, especially if its based off one general aptitude. If anything I feel certain grades should be tested to see what they have learned that year and were to place them come the following year.  This assingment has opened my eyes to so much educational wise on how different countries go about teaching and learning. For example, " In China, children begin school at the age of seven (or six if they live in Beijing, Shanghai, or other major cities) and attend classes on five days a week. Before that, children often attend pre-school...

Violence

Growing up in Chicago was no easy childhood, luckily I lived on a block were there was nothing but older people and some young children. As I grew up I saw my neighborhood turn into a very unsafe environment. I use to be able to ride my bike whenever I wanted to or walk to to corner store to buy some snacks, then times changed and walking to the corner your chances of getting shot at was high. My family never wanted me out at night or I had to be home when the street lights came on. I saw the neighborhood turn my grandma into a very paranoid person and I didn't like it at all. When I graduated high school I flew to college and didn't look back, of course I visit home, but I would never move back. Since I left in 2011 the violence rate has sky rocketed, and my mom has told me plenty of times not to come back because its not the same from when I left. As a child we had a buddy system no one out without a buddy, because the crime rate was so high and people were getting snatched l...

Breastfeeding

I chose the topic breastfeeding because I find the bond a child and mother have during this process amazing. I think everyone should at least try to breastfeed when having a child, it gives you that alone time and your baby more nutrition. "Babies who are exclusively breast-fed are less often sick, partly because breast milk provides antibodies and decreases allergies and asthma" (Berger, 2016). Not to mention breast milk is just better for the child to process and also good for the brain. I looked up breastfeeding in Australia and I believe this topic is well-rounded no matter what part of the country we are in. However, " Statistics from the  2010 Australian National Infant Feeding Survey 3 results indicate that 96% of mothers initiate breastfeeding. Thereafter, exclusive breastfeeding rates drop off" (Australian Breastfeeding Association, n.d.). Working in a daycare I can see half of my parents breastfeed all the way until 1 years old and others say they just c...

Childbirth

The personal birth experience I chose to right about is my own. From all the stories I hear from my mom and my family me being here today is a miracle from God. During my moms labor somehow the  umbilical cord got tied around my neck, which lead to me losing oxygen. Once the doctors finally pulled me out I was blue in their terms “dead”, my mom always says she wouldn’t open her eyes until she heard me cry. They worked on me for a couple minutes and after awhile I turned pink and had my first cry and my mom was relieved. Every time I hear this story I just imagine the horrible things that were going through my moms head and also how it is truly a blessing that I am here today seeing I was technically born dead. I chose this experience because its unique and very rare. I believe that the birth has many effects on child development such as if anything would go wrong during the birth it can sooner or later effect the development of the child. Even if the mother isn’t taking care of ...

Reflection

As this first class comes to a close I would like to thank my colleagues, teacher, and staff at walden university for helping in this transition. I have learned so much not only about myself but about my profession and the extra steps I will be taking to further my knowledge and enhance my classroom. I love the fact we had to make a blog, it really helped me overcome my fear of talking to people well more so sharing my thoughts. I'm not the type that likes to converse that much so this really helped me break out of my shell. I have learned so many laws, views, and ways of life throughout this course that will help me in my field. I now understand many of my children and why they exhibit certain traits in the classroom and I don't fault them for it anymore. I've learned to have more patience which was my ultimate goal, because you cant really be working with children and not have that key aspect. I've learned about many alternatives to making families aware of child ab...

Codes of Ethics

We shall build relationships with individual children and families while individualizing the curricula and learning environments to facilitate young children’s development and learning. (The Division for Early Childhood, 2000) I chose this idea because i strongly believe having a bond with your children and their families really benefits the child more than we know. If you don't have a relationship with the parents are you suppose to communicate to them their child's developmental path. Being able to have a lesson plan in effect in order to help enhance a child's want to learn and grow is something amazing in the field of early childhood education. Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect. (NAEYC, 2005) This statement is so true because without trust and respect there is no relationship, there has to be a foundation of trust in order to build respect for a individual I feel. ...
