Growing up in Chicago was no easy childhood, luckily I lived on a block were there was nothing but older people and some young children. As I grew up I saw my neighborhood turn into a very unsafe environment. I use to be able to ride my bike whenever I wanted to or walk to to corner store to buy some snacks, then times changed and walking to the corner your chances of getting shot at was high. My family never wanted me out at night or I had to be home when the street lights came on. I saw the neighborhood turn my grandma into a very paranoid person and I didn't like it at all. When I graduated high school I flew to college and didn't look back, of course I visit home, but I would never move back. Since I left in 2011 the violence rate has sky rocketed, and my mom has told me plenty of times not to come back because its not the same from when I left. As a child we had a buddy system no one out without a buddy, because the crime rate was so high and people were getting snatched left and right.
"In the period between 1996 and 2003, the incidence of recorded sexual assault for children aged 0–14 years accounted for around 40 percent of all recorded sexual assaults (Bricknell 2008)" . It amazes me that people can find it in themselves to do any type of harm to children. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it, its so sad to know that children have to carry such traumatizing experiences with them throughout their life.

This is so sad. What is worse is it isn't getting any better. I was fortunate to grow up in a neighborhood that I could ride my bike without a worry. Now a days I feel that no one is safe. I was always very cautious about letting my daughter go in the front yard without a parent. My husband is a police officer and understands it is happening everywhere. There was a van driving around nice neighborhoods trying to get kids to go with him. Thanks for sharing your story.
