Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

What is your definition of culture?
I believe the definition of culture is ones beliefs, morals, religion, lifestyle, and upbringing. The meaning of culture seems to have expanded over the years from when I was born it was just your heritage.
What is your definition of diversity?
I believe the definition of diversity is a human being or certain individual being separated yet familiarized with other human beings and their background. It is also being open to all walks of life and not judging them in the process.
What is your definition of culture?
I believe culture is the way you or your family view and do things. We all have our ways and rituals, which make us who we are.
What is your definition of diversity?
Being able to work and communicate with others from different backgrounds than yourself.
What is your definition of culture?
Is like traditions to me, things that have been passed down or valued among your family.
What is your definition of diversity?
Being able to interact, work, and communicate with multiple ethnic backgrounds and still find common ground within them all.
I did realize that most of the responses were similar to my thinking and to what I have read in most articles, especially when one of my interviews spoke on the not judging someone based off their culture. “When I meet someone who obviously doesn’t move in the same cultural framework that I do, I’m jarred. Because my way seems right, even normal, I tend to judge others based on my own perspective” (Gonzalez-Mena, 2008).
From watching the videos the one thing I noticed was omitted was the fact that culture is more than just ethnicity it’s our gestures the way we act, talk, walk, and think its everything! Seeing how others think have me wanting to gain more knowledge on the topic of diversity and culture even the more.

  1. Angelique,
Enjoyed reading your blog and the definitions your family/colleagues gave you for both culture and diversity. I agree that I found many similiaries as well in my responses as well as the responses I have read from our class colleagues. These last several weeks have allowed me to further self-reflect on a lot of things.
One of your friends responses said that “we should not judge someone based off their culture,” I believe this to be so true. We need to look at everyone as individual and find their own uniqueness. That’s why I feel communication and listening, respecting, and acceptance is very important. All very important for us as educators.
One of the words I found we all had in common with culture was traditions and I agree with you that the one thing that was omitted was the fact that “culture is more than just ethnicity, it our gestures (how we present ourselves to others) just like you said walking, talking, acting, it sure is everything about us! “
    Thanks for sharing.

  2. Great post! I think each of your definitions on culture and diversity are cool and that they are all different but still have a core. I think that you did a nice job with the post overall.

  3. Hello,
I saw the word rituals in your post. I realized that I hadnt seen that anywhere else so far. I think that the term really adds to the definition of culture. I agree the videos gave me incite on how important diversity is an how it is encompassed of the way we talk wlak and think. I do not think that most people know this based on the blog entries that I read about the interview quetions.

My Connections to Play

1."We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” -George Bernard Shaw 2.“Play is the beginning of knowledge.” -George Dorsey When I was younger play was a major part of my daily routine. I was barely in the house growing up, if anything I never wanted to back inside when the street lights came on. I learned so many rights and wrongs from climbing trees, riding my bike in the street, missing curfews, having play dates also taught me social skills as well. Parents always wanted the kids out the house, because sitting in front of a screen wasn't teaching them what they can learn from experience. Now a days it's a rare chance you see children who actually want to go outside and play, and that's all because of the time of techonokogy. Parents need to watch how much time they are letting their kids be on these tablets, cell phones, and computers.

My Supports

Within my daily environment I have a lot of people and things that support and aid me in getting my job done correctly. Some things I rely on and would have a hard time functioning without in my classroom is the app called precious status which is the form of communication between the school and the parents about their child. I never knew how much gloves came in handy either until we ran out one day and it was very hard trying to change children with the improper gloves or clean up for that matter. My director and assistant are also supportive people who help me throughout the day to make the day go smoother within the classroom and outside. My director makes sure I'm up to date with all my required trainings that way I can be the most effective teacher for my students. My assistant makes sure I'm not overwhelmed within the classroom and helps me with lesson plans, activities, and many other aspects of the classroom. I would be able to function without my assistant but it would...

Expanding Horizons and Expanding Resources

The podcast I chose to follow is called, "Angela Watson's Truth for Teachers". From this episode I learned some very good tips and practices I can put into effect in order to make sure I'm getting the proper rest and self-care I need. Teachers are no help to a student if they aren't in the right state of mind to teach, and that can be for many reasons such as lack of sleep, lack of eating, lack of exercise, lack of training, and many more reasons. Sometimes I get stressed out in class because I don't have all the materials needed to properly teach my students, yes they come first but if I'm not being supplied with the materials to teach them with then my state of mind is being jeopardized. Self-care goes a long way instead of just sitting around at home watching t.v. like I do I could watch an educational documentary and improve my skills as a teacher. This podcast is meant to, "speak life, encouragement, and truth into the minds and hearts of educato...
